Nutraferon N-CEFRO 500 mg Tablet is a broad-spectrum oral bactericidal antibacterial formulation containing Cefuroxime Axetil (equivalent to 500 mg of active Cefuroxime). As a lipophilic 1-acetyloxyethyl (axetil) ester prodrug of the second-generation cephalosporin cefuroxime, it is absorbed across the intestinal mucosa and hydrolyzed into active cefuroxime—delivering β-lactamase-stable coverage across upper and lower respiratory tract infections, acute bacterial sinusitis, otitis media, urinary tract infections, skin/soft-tissue infections, and early Lyme disease.

Bactericidal PBP Transpeptidation Blockade (Cefuroxime): Active cefuroxime binds with high affinity to bacterial penicillin-binding proteins (PBP1a, 1b, 2, and 3, especially PBP3), inhibiting peptidoglycan cell-wall cross-linking and activating autolytic murein hydrolases.
Axetil Ester Prodrug Hydrolysis & Food-Dependent Bioavailability: Non-specific esterases in the intestinal mucosa and portal blood cleave the axetil ester to release free cefuroxime, reaching peak plasma concentrations (C) within 2 to 3 hours.
Renal Elimination: Excreted >85–90% unchanged in the urine via glomerular filtration and active renal tubular secretion (blocked by probenecid), with a serum half-life of 1.2 to 1.5 hours.

Directions of Use & Safety Information

Dosage: Take strictly as prescribed by your physician—typically one 500 mg tablet every 12 hours (twice daily) for 7 to 10 days (or 20 days for early Lyme disease).
Mandatory Post-Meal Administration (Pharmacist Correction): Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water immediately AFTER a meal.
Do Not Crush & Tablet-vs-Suspension Non-Bioequivalence Warning: Never crush, chew, or split the tablet (intensely bitter taste). Furthermore, pharmacists must note that Cefuroxime Axetil tablets and oral suspension are NOT bioequivalent on a mg-for-mg basis and cannot be directly substituted milligram-for-milligram.
Acid-Suppressing Drug Interaction: Avoid concurrent Antacids, H2 blockers, or Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), as lowering gastric acidity significantly reduces Cefuroxime Axetil dissolution and bioavailability.
