Sevelamer is not absorbed into the blood; it acts inside the stomach and intestine as a chemical sponge that traps phosphorus from the food you eat. Taking it on an empty stomach provides no phosphate-binding benefit.

Calcium-based binders (calcium acetate or calcium carbonate) add large amounts of elemental calcium that can deposit in coronary arteries and heart valves, causing vascular calcification. Sevelamer binds phosphate with zero calcium and zero aluminum.

Sevelamer is a hydrogel polymer that swells rapidly when wet. Chewing or crushing the tablet causes it to expand in the mouth or throat, posing a serious choking or oesophageal obstruction hazard.

Space by at least 1 hour before or 3 hours after taking Ciprofloxacin (and other fluoroquinolones), Levothyroxine (thyroid hormone), and transplant immunosuppressants (Mycophenolate, Tacrolimus, Cyclosporine), as well as fat-soluble vitamins (Vitamins A, D, E, K) and Folic Acid.

Mild nausea, flatulence, or constipation can occur. However, rare cases of serious gastrointestinal ulceration, bleeding, necrosis, or bowel perforation associated with crystal deposition have been reported; report severe abdominal pain, bloody/tarry stools, or worsening severe constipation to your nephrologist immediately.
